Losing Sight 3.9/5 BARKS.*
Cystic creates music that you listen to when you’re on to something good…real good. When you know you’re about to blow up, when you know you have people by your side, and when you know you have people at your neck.
Cystic has a unique sound of southern flare mixed with a midwestern flow. It’s been really enjoyable to listen to him. He’s a natural underdog, he has cystic fibrosis, he’s admittedly not a gangster, but he loves being an artist. Passion is on his side.
You enjoy his music because you can also relate to being an underdog in some capacity.
In my professional opinion, if you wanted a well-rounded introduction to Cystic, you would want to listen to: “No Remorse“. It’s not cartoony, or a parody of itself…it goes hard simply because it can, and it has to. He admittedly talks about how hard it is to survive in the rap genre due to it always being a catch 22.
You’ll hear throughout Cystic’s, thirty-eight released songs, growth, and enthusiasm. The enthusiasm should not be misread as weakness or eagerness to please. Don’t get it twisted Cystic doesn’t give a fuck what you think.
That’s why he’s great.
Now, admittedly, I missed the midnight release of his new song: Losing Sight but having spent the last few days listening to it, the hook and impending flow reminds me of The Lox, specifically 2020’s song “Bout Shit“. It’s dirty in the way you want your dirty rap to be.
The beat doesn’t quit, it’s masterfully executed, however, I cannot help but wonder if the perfection takes away from Cystic, lyrically. The entire song is a hook, and while that sounds appealing, there’s no natural crescendo or decrescendo. It’s all just a hook.
Considering this a taste of a larger project, color me fucking fascinated and sign me up for that. That being said, I’m thankful this wasn’t my introduction to Cystic because having heard his 100, I’m not interested in hearing his 90,80,70…
Artistically, and rhythmically this strikes me as a freestyle more than anything. It’s tricky to judge freestyles because they tend to be more emotionally elevated than a regular track. I wish Cystic took his time with this one, especially since that initial hook goes so damn hard.
Don’t get me wrong, this still winds up on my playlist, and Cystic beats out many of the rappers I’ve covered in the past by MILES, I just want to hear more. Especially anything adding on to this song. Give me this as the head track to a Cystic album I’m there…just don’t toss me “Losing Sight” and walk away.
